I just watched a great documentary about foreigners living in Japan. And it’s not a usual documentary. This stuff is so authentic that I am thinking it would be so great to have a documentary like this for every country in the world. Taking few expats and ask them the same questions. Is there someone willing to do it with me?
I visited Japan only once and the first thing which struck me was this perfectly operating society where the one means a little and the whole means a lot. It looks like an alien city with such advanced society. I also experienced this little shady form of racism when they searched my bag. I think I was the only one from the plane which was picked. But everything was very nice and gentle.
There was a funny moment in a hostel in Tokyo when a guy working there asked me where I am from. I said: “Czech Republic”, and he said, “Ooh, Checko.” I asked him if he heard about the country and he replied: “Of course, from a comics – Manga”. I was obviously interested which character was Czech in the Manga and he told me: “A bad guy.” Then he realised it sounds a little bit weird and when I was trying to dig more, he was just smiling and denying he said that. “What type of bad guy?”, I was curious, but nothing else came from him. That reminds me a moment from the documentary one exact is talking about. You want to know more, dig for the truth, but you get nowhere.
A policeman ran to him and beat him with a baton.
Breaking rules in Japan
Japanese culture is very law-abiding. I’ve never tried anything which was inappropriate, but my friend told me that she witnessed interesting thing. Some Japanese guy tried to jump over the fence in the subway to avoid paying. A policeman ran to him and beat him with a baton. Then he sold the guy a train ticket and wished him a nice day. That is very typical for Japan I think. If you are a tourist, this wouldn’t happen to you. Tourists get away with many things there.
Police has to locate Chinese immigrants so they can’t loot.
One last possibly racist thing I’ve heard and I don’t have it confirmed. Japan is expecting a big earthquake. It has to come sometimes in the future. The mayor of Tokyo once said that when this earthquake will come, police has to locate Chinese immigrants so they can’t loot. If this is truth I think it’s ridiculous.
After all, my impression from Japan was so intense that I know I have to definitely come back. There is nothing like Japan in the world. Sorry to my Japanese friends if the article is too much critical. Tokyo is one my three most favourite cities in the world and Japan is simply amazing.
Do you have some cool story from Japan? Write it into comments. What do you think about my article? Do you agree with it?
